30th Book Anniversary

ZZ9's Celebrations of the 30th Anniversary of the Book of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Saturday October 10, 2009

We have a special Saturday of events lined up to complement Penguin's Hitchcon'09 on Sunday October 11, 2009.
All are welcome; members, non-members and ex-members alike, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the publication of the first Hitchhiker book which took place on October 12, 1979.

Islington Slouch - 13:00 Saturday October 10, 2009

Douglas Adams lived at a number of addresses around the Islington area from the mid Seventies, with a few years spent on the west coast of America writing film script drafts. Of special interest for this trip will be a walk past the address where Douglas wrote the first Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy book (we have cleared this with the current owner). After that we will probably pop on the tube to nip down to the Angel tube station as Adams used the Islington area for inspiration for the Hitchhiker and Dirk Gently books. Other places we will wander by include the office of estate agents Hotblack Desiato, the Regent's Canal where Dirk Gently sent Richard McDuff swimming, the location that inspired Fenchurch's door in So Long and Thanks for All the Fish, and more.

Meet at Archway tube station at 13:00.
As we will be going onto the Angel later, best to have a ticket that will do that journey as well. Look for a friendly looking group of people some of whom will no doubt be wearing Don't Panic t-shirts and may be waving the odd towel around. If you want to let us know you are coming and for us to look out for you then let Jim, our Meetings Organiser, know beforehand via the form behind the link. If you are trying to find us on the day then call the ZZ9 Rap Rod on 07527 072155.

Captain's Cabin Party - 19:00 Saturday October 10, 2009

The Captain's Cabin is a pub of interest to Hitchhiker fans. It is just around the corner from the site of the Paris Theatre where the first two radio series were recorded. This historic location is now a branch of LA Fitness. After recording sessions at the Paris, cast and crew often retired to the Captain's Cabin for liquid refreshment. ZZ9 will be upholding this tradition and hope to have some special guests to mix and mingle with as we make a weekend of Penguin's Hitchcon'09 event. All welcome, we are booked in upstairs from 7pm, and they serve food until 9pm. There may be a talk and/or a pub quiz if we are really together and hoopy. We have a habit of staying in pubs until they close so pop along any time after seven.

From 7pm at the Captain's Cabin, 4-7 Norris Street, London, SW1Y 4RJ
If you want to be form about it then there is a PDF flyer/invite you can download, which also has a handy map.

Hitchcon'09 - Sunday October 11, 2009

Penguin's event at the Southbank Centre has some FREE parts, and some paid for parts. ZZ9 will be there having fun in the FREE section. Details at the Southbank Centre website.
